How Mr. Obinna Makah Made It Big In Custard Business
Mr. Obinna did not know he was going to make a fortune out of Custard Production business when he forayed into it about seven years ago.
The business, for me, was borne out of passion. I started with just #10,000 back then and when the demand for my brand of custard began to increase, I had to bring in another hand. Between then and now, through focus, hard work and plough backs, things have change for better. By God’s grace I have an equipped factory with a couple of staff. Another factory is being set up at Abuja to cater for custard consumers in the North. We have our distribution bus. Also, I can conveniently pay my bills and I live in my own house, “he revealed.
Here is a step-by-step guide for any INCOME-INFO-SEACH who wishes to turn his or her fortune for good running a custard production business even from the backyard.
Why Choose Custard Production?
One of the most critical questions you must answer before starting out in business is to analyze whether there’s a market for the product or service you want to bring to the market place. Take for example Custard. Custard as a food item is a product with mass acceptance. It’s a food product that cuts across age, gender, ethnic and custard will always sell.
What Custard is Made of
According to Obinna Mekah, Custard can be said to be a treated form of pap. The truth is, the same corn used in producing pap is used for Custard. However, custard is more nutritious than pap simply because nutrient is added. Custard is 100% made up of powdered edible corn starch. The edible corn starch (used also for pharmaceutical products or whitish drugs) is produced maily from Holland and China. Other constituents of custard includes flavor (eg. Berries, banana, vanilla), concentrated nutrients- Vitamin A, and C, Iron)
Who are the Consumers of Custard?
There’s no limit to the number of consumers of this food product. The health properties contained in Custard make it a must in every home. But majorly we have the following groups of consumers;
Children: Custard is a very good meal for children of all categories. Custard is a light meal for breakfast and dinner. Custard comes in various flavors and children enjoy it more when taken with milk.
Students: Custard is packaged such that student in boarding schools can take it with them to the boarding house
Pregnant women: Because of the nutrients present in Custard, it’s more preferable for pregnant women than pap that has no nutrient.
Nursing mothers: Custard is highly recommended for breastfeeding mothers.
Roadside beverage sellers: It is not uncommon to find roadside beverage sellers who also sell custards to commuters, in the morning as they go to work and sometimes at night.
Religious Faithfuls: In Nigeria, we have seasons when the two major religions engaged in abstinence from food known as fasting. Custard is often in demand at such times as a meal taken to refresh the stomach before taking a heavy food.
Startup Capital
Obinna may have started with #10,000 back then but one should understand that prices of production materials have gone high. However, for everyone with a passion for this business, he or she can start with as low as #40,000. This amount conveniently covers all the necessary materials needed to start up. Most of the materials are sold in measurement. If therefore you know the quantity you want to produce then simply request for that.
What You Need To Set Up Production
Mixing tank: This is needed for mixing your edible corn starch. You are good to go with the biggest or largest plastic drum in the market. However, it is preferable to use aluminium tank, although expensive.
Smaller Plastic: This is needed for premixing process. Here you mix your liquid ingredients such as vitamins, ………..with a little bit of ………. starch before pouring into the big mixing plastic drum.
A sealer: Used for sealing your nylon package custard.
Table: You need a production table.
Custard Nylon: You need nylon (similar to that of pure water) for your custard packaging.
Big Spoons: You need a strong stainless spoon to use in all stages of stiring.
Production Apron: Like you see baker do, you need to have your production apron.
Mixing machine: This is a machine you require as your production process expands. But for a cottage producer you could start manually with spoons for mixing. Others include the ……….. starch, flavouring and the concentrated vitamins such as …………... it is rather unfortunate that a large percentage of custard seen around in the market lack these vitamins as part of their production constituents. They contain just the ………….. and flavouring.
Where To Get Raw Materials
In Lagos, the two major markets where custard raw materials are sold are …… (custard material market) and ……. market, ………. Here you have wholesalers of ….. starch, flavours, concentrated nutrients etc. you need to be wary of fake ones. Just cultivate a relationship with the sellers and you’re sure of getting the original ones.
Simple Production Process
Open your 25kg pack …….., pour a little into the smaller plastic for premixing (that is, thorough mixture of ………., flavor and concentrated ………..). Then pour the remaining ……… into the bigger plastic drum. Once your premixing is done, go ahead and pour premixed content into the big plastic drum and mix everything together. Make sure there are no pallets. After you have finished mixing, then you begin the process of packaging. You are done in 20minutes.
Where To Start From
There’s nothing stopping anyone from starting from his or her backyard. The most important caution which the regulatory authorities are also concerned about is the hygiene of your environment. Remember that you’re dealing with what people are going to take in. better still if you can get a production space outside of your place of resident, you are good to go.
Types Of Custard Packaging
There are three major custard packaging in the market as at today.
Nylon Packaging: This is very common, being sold especially by roadside provisions sellers. You also refer to it as sachet just like you have your sachet water.
Bucket Packaging: This is also very common in the market place. They common in yellow colour, easy to carry bucket with a red cover. You have them in big and small sizes.
Lunchbox Packaging: This also is not so common. This type of packaging gives children opportunity of turning the pack into a lunch box.
Refill Pack: Like you have your regular refill pack of powder milk, so you have custard come in refill pack for the family use. Though, this pack is not common.
Marketing Strategy
No matter the number of custard brands in the market, Obinna says the market can still accommodate as many that are willing to invest in the business. The most important thing is that you must get your custard formulation right. Remember a good product sells itself. However, if you are starting out, one key marketing strategy is to give out free samples especially to your neighbours. If you belong to a religious body like a church or mosque, you could appeal to your leader to allow you do a small presentation of your product.
Then again, take free samples of your product to the local market where you have top custard sellers. Establish a relationship with them and you see your custard brand flying. If possible you could have some promotional items such as branded biros, exercise books etc, packaged alongside each of your custard brand.
Profitability Potential
There is no doubt that this is a profitable business. It has no respect for seasons. If you manage your business well, you are sure of raking in fortunes out custard production business. This is one business that, if well managed, is guaranteed to pay your bills and even put a roof over your head over time. Mr Obinna is indeed a true life testimony strong enough to convince any smart Nigerian that custard business is a goldmine.
How To Succeed In Custard Production Business
Get your formulation right: The taste of the pudding, they say, is in the eating. If you must succeed in custard production business, you must make sure you get your formulation right. Consumers will go more for the brands that have the right taste. Make sure you are also consistent.
Have knowledge of printing: Most custard produced in sachets usually have their brand label fade out. This is due to poor printing. The implication is that if your product name cannot be easily indentified in the market place, then you lose your share of the market to your competitors. Obinna advises that you use gas printing to make your label durable.
Plough Profit Back: Your business cannot succeed if you eat all your profit. Always plough back if you want the business to grow. This is Mr. Obinna’s winning secret.
Be Creative: You can actually be creative with your brand of custard by churning out different flavours such as vanilla, banana, milk etc.
Easy Steps to Getting Government Food Regulatory Approval
It is never advisable to run your custard production business in hiding. If you have the right formulation, then you must be confident enough to subject it for test by the appropriate regulatory body and get your certification. Here are simple steps to guide you.
- Get your business name registered with CAC. This, you can do for less than #7,000
- You need to go to FIIRO (Federal Institute of Industrial Research, …….) with a sample of your formulated custard package in a white container. FIIRO is located at ……..
- Before getting to FIIRO, you need to label the packaged custard sample with your intended brand name with your registered company name. Please note that FIIRO is responsible for analyzing your product to ensure that product content is up to standard and not false claim.
- Pick up a form: while you present your custard sample, pick a FIIRO form for #3,000 and submit.
- Get Your Certificate: Once your product is FIIRO certified, you are free to operate without fear. The good thing here is that with your FIIRO certification, it makes your NAFDAC approval very easy. Remember, you are free to operate while still processing NAFDAC. FIIRO certification covers you.
However, because of the consumers who are used to just NAFDAC approved foods, it’s safer to process your NAFDAC after the FIIRO approval.
Please be wary of quack who want to extort money from you to help facilitate your certification. This is a process as simple as ABC. If however, you are finding it tough here in Lagos to get approval due to cost of space, you can set up a temporary production outfit outside of Lagos where space is cheap. Process your NAFDAC certifications there and then relocate back to Lagos. NAFDAC registration should not take you more than #30,000.
